Life in Edo
26 Views of LIFE in EDO The Edo Period (1603-1868) A New century has begun. Yet we are still unable to see beyond today's confusion because our economic and social system are at breaking points. Today's yardsticks and values alone are no longer adequate enough to show us how we can overcome this situation. We have decided to take ourselves back four hundred years in time to Edo Period to see if we can find values that can act as clues on how we can address today's issues. |

Fudegraphy
Fudegraphy is a new type of word art. That is to write western-style characters with eastern-style pen. With hand-written characters at its core, this adds a vigor (ikioi) and a nature flow (nagare), not seen before. Presently there are millions of Haiku lovers. The Narrow Road to the Deep North (Oku) is a series of haiku written by Basho. I have used it in my fudegraphy. Today, for many purposes, from writing letters onwards, the computer is used. But like a pendulum swinging, these days, when people want to distinguish their origi- nality or independence, using a brush is fresh and stylish. Fudegraphy has a large potential for commercial use-for restaurant menus, titles of posters and brochures, etc. |

Iroha Karta
Iroha-Karuta is a play appeared in Edo period (1603-1868) The game teaches children the wisdom for living and the inconsistencies with which we have nothing to do with. From Edo to Taisho period (1912-1926), there were published more than 40 variations. In the game, there're some controversial proverbs. We know all of them are true and often happen in our life. The contents seem to have changed gradually as the time goes by. Some of them aren't understandable now, but there are totally full of humor and sometimes of playful touch with irony in Edo period, that's "Iroha-Karuta" ! |

Play in Edo
Many plays in Edo Period remained in Japan for a long time, before Tokyo Olympics (1964) . Although such plays are likely to be placed by computer games nowadays. The stress society started as many of these plays disappeared. Recently, the people engaged in the psychotherapy are paying attention to "Play as the reparable process of the mind". Look at the children's smiles here. They are serious but bottomless happy. I'm sure that your stress will be healed by seeing them. |
